Dog Assessments for Child Adoption and Foster Agencies
It is often necessary to assess the pets of potential foster or adoptive parents to ensure the home is a safe environment for children. My extensive knowledge and experience in the field of canine behaviour and previous experience as a Detective Constable on a Child Protection Unit have equipped me with the expertise to assess the temperament of animals whose owners are applying to adopt or foster a child. I then prepare a detailed report which can be used in court if required.
The assessment process involves:
- A home visit lasting approximately two hours
A report is then sent to the agency requesting the assessment, to include:
- Owner experience and relationship with the animal(s)
- The behaviour of the dog in social situations, training background and health issues
- Practical home considerations
- The behaviour of the dog with household members, visitors, and children of various age groups
- A professional opinion on any risks the dog may present to children
- Advice regarding the introduction of children and animals
