Dog Bite Prevention
Dog bites are increasing annually and 77% of bites are by familiar dogs. Dogs rarely bite out of the blue and understanding the reasons dogs bite, and the things our dogs try to communicate using their body language can help prevent bites occurring.
I offer dog bite prevention education for pre school and primary school children in schools and community groups in Cheshire and North Wales using the I Speak Doggie and Dog Stars presentations.
Co-operative Care
Throughout their lifetime our pets need a visit to the vets and groomers for routine treatments and sometimes emergency care. Many animals find this very stressful and the use of force in these situations is likely to increase anxiety further.
Teaching an animal that they can have some control in these situations can reduce their stress and fear and increase their confidence and tolerance for handling during veterinary examinations, grooming, or handling. Research has shown that while it may seem that giving a pet the choice to participate in these situations may be counterintuitive – many people assume that giving an animal a sense of control and choice would just result in them not participating in the unpleasant experience—the opposite is true when co-operative care is properly trained: Animals taught using co-operative care training willingly participate in unpleasant events.
I offer co-operative care training for pet owners to help their pet learn to tolerate procedures such as nail trimming, veterinary examinations and grooming. Using co-operative care training is beneficial to the animal’s welfare and also reduces the risk of bites occurring to pet owners or the animal professionals involved in handling the pet.
